I am a student in Mogadishu, Somalia, and like many of my peers, I am trying hard to stay focused on my education. I know that education is the key to a better future and a way out of poverty. However, in a country like Somalia, where poverty is widespread and access to quality education is limited, staying focused on my studies is no easy task.

In Mogadishu, education is not just about attending school and getting good grades. It is also about survival and thinking of ways to generate income in order to meet basic needs such as food, shelter, and clothing. After graduation, many of us will have to enter the workforce and find ways to earn a living. This means thinking about labor costs, utility costs, and operating costs in order to start a business or secure a job that will provide a steady income.

In Africa, poverty is a major issue that affects millions of people. According to the World Bank, more than half of the population in sub-Saharan Africa lives on less than $1.90 a day. This extreme poverty is a result of a lack of access to basic services such as healthcare, education, and clean water, as well as high levels of unemployment and underemployment.

There are several factors that contribute to poverty in Africa, including political instability, corruption, lack of infrastructure, and limited access to education and healthcare. These factors create a vicious cycle of poverty that is difficult to break.

In order to address the issue of poverty in Africa, it is important to understand its root causes and come up with effective strategies to tackle them. This may involve investing in education and skills training, creating job opportunities, improving access to healthcare and social services, and promoting good governance and transparency.

Despite the challenges we face in Mogadishu, I remain hopeful that I can overcome the obstacles and create a better future for myself and my community. I believe that with hard work, determination, and support from my family and teachers, I can achieve my goals and break the cycle of poverty that has plagued my country for far too long.

Luckily, we have the Turkish Development Agency (TIKA) in our company, which provides assistance with paperwork regarding public-private partnerships, SME entrepreneurship, and other systems that collaborate with the Somali government to address the need for jobs in the market. One of the key areas that TIKA focuses on is promoting social enterprises (SE) as a way to create employment opportunities and support economic development in Somalia.

SEs play a crucial role in addressing social and environmental challenges while generating sustainable income for individuals and communities. However, they often face various challenges in accessing funding, launching new initiatives, and recruiting talented employees. TIKA has recognized these obstacles and is working to support SEs in several ways:

Firstly, TIKA is increasing the amount and allocation of funding to fit SE needs. This includes utilizing impact-oriented venture capital funds or performance-based funding schemes like Development Impact Bonds to provide SEs with the necessary capital to grow and expand their businesses. Additionally, TIKA is exploring ways to make debt funding more accessible by changing collateral requirements or establishing guarantee funds.
