OUR STORY

Quality, not quantity

I am a student in Mogadishu, Somalia, and like many of my peers, I am trying hard to stay focused on my education. I know that education is the key to a better future and a way out of poverty. However, in a country like Somalia, where poverty is widespread and access to quality education is limited, staying focused on my studies is no easy task.

In Mogadishu, education is not just about attending school and getting good grades. It is also about survival and thinking of ways to generate income in order to meet basic needs such as food, shelter, and clothing. After graduation, many of us will have to enter the workforce and find ways to earn a living. This means thinking about labor costs, utility costs, and operating costs in order to start a business or secure a job that will provide a steady income.

In Africa, poverty is a major issue that affects millions of people. According to the World Bank, more than half of the population in sub-Saharan Africa lives on less than $1.90 a day. This extreme poverty is a result of a lack of access to basic services such as healthcare, education, and clean water, as well as high levels of unemployment and underemployment.

There are several factors that contribute to poverty in Africa, including political instability, corruption, lack of infrastructure, and limited access to education and healthcare. These factors create a vicious cycle of poverty that is difficult to break.

In order to address the issue of poverty in Africa, it is important to understand its root causes and come up with effective strategies to tackle them. This may involve investing in education and skills training, creating job opportunities, improving access to healthcare and social services, and promoting good governance and transparency.

Despite the challenges we face in Mogadishu, I remain hopeful that I can overcome the obstacles and create a better future for myself and my community. I believe that with hard work, determination, and support from my family and teachers, I can achieve my goals and break the cycle of poverty that has plagued my country for far too long.

As I continue my studies and work towards a brighter future, I am reminded of the importance of education and the power it has to change lives. I am determined to stay focused on my studies and pursue my dreams, knowing that education is the key to a better future for myself and for my country.

TIKA focuses on is promoting social enterprises (SE) as a way to create employment opportunities and support economic development in Somalia

As a young Somali citizen from Mogadishu, I have been fortunate to have received support from my parents throughout my education, providing me with a place to sleep, food, and shelter. However, as I have reached a critical age where I need to navigate society and find suitable income in Mogadishu, I have realized the importance of having access to resources and opportunities to help me succeed in the workforce.

Luckily, we have the Turkish Development Agency (TIKA) in our company, which provides assistance with paperwork regarding public-private partnerships, SME entrepreneurship, and other systems that collaborate with the Somali government to address the need for jobs in the market. One of the key areas that TIKA focuses on is promoting social enterprises (SE) as a way to create employment opportunities and support economic development in Somalia.

SEs play a crucial role in addressing social and environmental challenges while generating sustainable income for individuals and communities. However, they often face various challenges in accessing funding, launching new initiatives, and recruiting talented employees. TIKA has recognized these obstacles and is working to support SEs in several ways:

Firstly, TIKA is increasing the amount and allocation of funding to fit SE needs. This includes utilizing impact-oriented venture capital funds or performance-based funding schemes like Development Impact Bonds to provide SEs with the necessary capital to grow and expand their businesses. Additionally, TIKA is exploring ways to make debt funding more accessible by changing collateral requirements or establishing guarantee funds.

Secondly, TIKA is launching challenges and competitions to pilot new business lines for SEs. This allows entrepreneurs to test new ideas, diversify their product or service portfolio, and enter new markets. By providing grants and support for these initiatives, TIKA is helping SEs minimize risks and attract investments from later-stage funders.

Lastly, TIKA is financially supporting SEs in recruiting and retaining employees. SEs often face stiff competition from established NGOs and private sector organizations for talented individuals. By offering support programs for recruitment, employee benefits, and social protection schemes, TIKA is helping SEs become more attractive employers and retain skilled workers.

In conclusion, I am grateful for the support and assistance that TIKA is providing to promote social entrepreneurship in Somalia. By investing in SEs, we can create more jobs, address social and environmental challenges, and contribute to the sustainable development of our country. I look forward to taking advantage of these opportunities and contributing to the growth of our economy through entrepreneurship. Thank you for your support.

His passion and dedication have inspired many, including myself, to strive for success and make a difference in our community.

Today's theme in the course of this essay is eInfrastructures in Mogadishu. This topic is crucial as it provides an opportunity for job creation and workplace development within the local governance. The government of Somalia has shown interest in various areas such as health, demographic change, sustainable agriculture, energy, transport, climate action, societies, and security. With their fresh ideas and innovative thinking, these young individuals are making significant contributions to filling the gaps and driving positive changes within the community.

Moreover, the local government is actively seeking investment and funding from international partners such as the EU and Turkey. In Mogadishu, the capital city of Somalia, there is a wealth of information available on various government websites such as mop.gov.so, mof.gov.so, moct.gov.so, and more. These websites serve as valuable resources for both citizens and officials, providing up-to-date information on policies, programs, and initiatives within the government.

One notable trend in Mogadishu is the influx of new graduates who are actively participating in the local governance level. Armed with fresh ideas and a desire to make a difference, these young professionals are becoming valuable assets to the government. By bringing new perspectives and innovative solutions to the table, these graduates are helping to fill the gap in governance and contribute to the development of the city.

In addition to the efforts of new graduates, the local government in Mogadishu is also seeking investment and funding opportunities in the European Union and Turkey. By forging partnerships with these international entities, the government aims to secure financial support for key projects and initiatives that will benefit the city and its residents. These partnerships also provide opportunities for knowledge exchange and capacity building, ultimately helping to strengthen the government's ability to govern effectively.

Overall, the abundance of information available on government websites, coupled with the contributions of new graduates and partnerships with international entities, reflect a growing commitment to good governance and development in Mogadishu. By leveraging these resources and tapping into the expertise of a diverse range of stakeholders, the city is poised to overcome challenges and achieve sustainable growth in the years to come.

As a young entrepreneur in Mogadishu, Somalia, seeking to start my own small and medium enterprise (SME) business, I have taken the initiative to explore various avenues for potential business ideas that can make a positive impact on the local community. In my research, I have closely examined the websites of key government ministries in Mogadishu, including mop.gov.so, mof.gov.so, and moct.gov.so, to gain valuable insights into the current priorities and initiatives of the government in the areas of water, energy, food, and transportation.

The introduction of electric urban and peri-urban Bus Rapid Transit systems presents an exciting opportunity for innovation and entrepreneurship in the transportation sector. As a young student pursuing a bachelor's degree, I dream of finding my dream job in order to secure a stable income

It seems that it is too early in the year to counter 100 emerging SMEs in various industries, but the local governance in Somalia is taking this progress seriously. The Ministry of Planning, Investment, and Economic Development (MOPIED), the Ministry of Finance (MOF), and the Ministry of Commerce and Trade (MOCT) are stressing the importance of their mission and goals in these governance offices. They are working diligently to create a conducive environment for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to thrive and contribute to the economy.

As a young student pursuing a bachelor's degree, I dream of finding my dream job in order to secure a stable income. The government offices in Somalia are aware of the potential of SMEs in driving economic growth and creating job opportunities for young people like me. They understand the importance of supporting SMEs and providing them with the necessary resources and facilities to succeed.

One of the key drivers of economic growth in Somalia is the partnership between Turkey and Africa. Turkish-African relations have seen significant growth since Ankara declared 2005 as 'the year of Africa'. Turkey's increasing economic, political, and security involvement in Africa reflects its desire to establish new markets for its manufactured goods and its defense and armaments industry. This partnership is beneficial for both Turkey and Africa, as it presents opportunities for mutual growth and development.

The government offices in Somalia are working towards creating a conducive environment for SMEs to thrive, and the partnership between Turkey and Africa is a positive step towards achieving this goal. As a young student with dreams of securing a job and contributing to the economy, I am hopeful that these efforts will lead to positive outcomes for the country. I believe that with the right support and opportunities, SMEs can play a crucial role in driving economic growth and creating job opportunities for young people in Somalia.

In conclusion, the local governance in Somalia is taking the progress of SMEs seriously, and the partnership between Turkey and Africa is a key driver of economic growth in the country. As a young student with dreams of securing a job and contributing to the economy, I am hopeful that these efforts will lead to positive outcomes for Somalia. I am optimistic about the future and believe that with the right support and opportunities, SMEs can make a significant impact on the economy and provide opportunities for young people like me.

It is truly impressive to see how Turkey has evolved from being a recipient of aid to being a giver of support to other nations

As young graduates from Mogadishu universities, we are fortunate to live in a time where information is readily available at our fingertips. With just a few clicks, we can access local governance websites such as mop.gov.so, moct.gov.so, moe.gov.so, and mof.gov.so, where we can find valuable resources and opportunities for our future endeavors.

One such opportunity that has caught our eye is the $1000 USD fund for entrepreneurs and SME start-ups, which is generously provided by Turkey's development initiatives in Africa. This funding could be a game-changer for many young entrepreneurs looking to kickstart their business ventures and make a difference in their communities.

The websites emphasize the importance of dealing with clients, customers, authorities, and subcontractors in a professional and ethical manner. This is crucial for the success of any business plan and ensures that all stakeholders are satisfied with the outcome of the collaboration.

It is truly impressive to see how Turkey has evolved from being a recipient of aid to being a giver of support to other nations. This shift demonstrates Turkey's commitment to empowering African countries and helping them thrive in a rapidly changing global landscape. Africa is no longer just a continent in need of assistance; it is now a region with immense potential and opportunities for growth.

Professor Adam Sebyala, a respected lecturer at our university, acknowledges Turkey's efforts in Africa and praises the establishment of soft power tools such as TIKA, which have made a significant impact on the continent. These initiatives not only benefit the recipient countries but also strengthen Turkey's position as a key player in international affairs.

As young graduates, we are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead and the opportunities that these websites have presented to us. We see a bright future where we can utilize the knowledge and skills we have acquired in our studies to make a positive impact on our society and contribute to the development of our country.

We are grateful for the support and resources provided by Turkey and look forward to seizing the opportunities that come our way. With determination, hard work, and a commitment to excellence, we believe that we can achieve great things and create a better future for ourselves and our communities. Together, we can build a prosperous and thriving Somalia that we can all be proud of.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a renowned scholar and leader, has become a prominent figure in Mogadishu by bringing interesting ventures and investments to the locals. His efforts have not only transformed the city's landscape but have also educated a generation of university graduates. Erdogan's important speeches have highlighted certain scenarios in which the people's pockets need care and funding, leading to a wave of talent from Istanbul to Mogadishu.

One such example is my sister, who has been awarded a scholarship to study social science and public management at Konya Turkey University. This opportunity has been made possible by Erdogan's initiatives to attract eager young individuals to Turkey through incentives and opportunities for higher education.

The involvement of Turkey in African countries, including Egypt, has been widely covered on Somali local governance websites such as mop.gov.so, mof.gov.so, moct.gov.so, and moe.gov.so. These websites provide valuable information on the socioeconomic impact of Turkey's investments and partnerships in the region, which are aimed at empowering local communities and lifting their purchasing power.

Overall, Erdogan's influence in Mogadishu has been significant, with many individuals benefiting from the opportunities and initiatives brought forth by Turkey. The collaboration between Turkey and African countries has opened up new prospects for growth and development, ultimately leading to a brighter future for all involved.
